Colleen Brady: Supporting Teens Through Coaching
Whether teaching yoga, English, prevention education, or business, I have always been a teacher or coach. My most rewarding work was with middle, high school, and university students in the public and private Baltimore, Maryland schools.
As a prevention educator for eight years, my classes included substance abuse, anti-bullying, stress reduction, eating disorders, media literacy, and internet safety, among others.
I found that I connected deeply with students and was able to help them gain perspective and navigate their ever-changing world. When creating curricula, I sought training from experts in the field, including Rosalind Wiseman, Sheppard Pratt, Johns Hopkins, and the FBI (Innocent Images), among others.
As a mother of two young adults, a Recovery Coach Professional, and a trained life coach, I am uniquely positioned to help our youth bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
What I Do - For Parents
The pressure our youth face today is similar and different than when you were young. Whatever they’re facing, I’m here to help.
According to The Search Institute, every teen needs a mentor other than a parent, whether they’re struggling or not. I can fill that gap for your teen and help them reach their potential by guiding them to discover and remove the barriers that get in the way.
Why is this role of mentor/coach so important? Many kids report that they don’t want to talk to their parents because they:
get disappointed,
judge,
overreact,
lecture,
rush to fix problems,
and do not let go of their past mistakes.
Can you see this in your relationship with your teen?
What are your expectations of your teen? While my goal is not to make your teen become who you want them to be, I can help them be the best version of themselves, which can lead to a stronger relationship with you and better overall communication skills.
What I Do - For Teens
Finding your place in your world can be challenging. You’re being bombarded with expectations and pressure from all over. It’s a confusing time, and I get it. Let’s work together to gain perspective while navigating these pressures. Whether you’re struggling with an addiction or life challenges, I’m here to help you get from where you are to where you want to be.
Here are some things I can help you with:
· Making and keeping connections.
· Setting and meeting goals.
· Navigating your world and its pressures.
· Gaining perspective.
· Learn about emotional intelligence and emotional regulation.
· Understand critical thinking and how to use it.
· Practice decision-making.
· Advocate for yourself.
· Seek recovery (if needed/desired).
What happens in our sessions stays in our sessions unless you have a plan to harm yourself or another person. Your parents’ involvement in our sessions is up to you. I offer your parents a few phone sessions with me but I won’t share anything you don’t want me to.
